Terrazzo is making a huge comeback in the mid-century desert home construction. One of our biggest clients builds modern homes exclusively with terrazzo floors.
Terrazzo is perhaps the most mysterious and misunderstood by both people and professionals. This can cause some serious problems when it comes to maintaining it since it doesn't fall into the normal category of stone, concrete or other manmade floors.
It is technically a concrete floor, all concrete floors have an "aggregate" or content of stand and stone along with the cement when mixed. However, it is ground and polished after is poured to produce a look of "flat" exposed aggregate, this creates a very stunning looking floor.
Most modern terrazzo floors are sealed with a film based sealer, solvent or water base, just like sealed concrete floors. However, original terrazzo floors were only polished as the only maintenance process (just like a stone floor) and some terrazzo floors are still maintained this way. The challenge is making sure one understands the difference, going in the wrong direction to care for terrazzo can cause serious problems.
The benefits of terrazzo are:
Outstanding Durability and Low Maintenance
Non-porous surface will not promote microbial growth, mold or mildew
Recycled materials can be used in the fabrication of terrazzo
